Taunton Concert Band, which marked in 2017 it’s 125th year of existence, completed a 24hr play-a-thon last weekend in special aid of the Hope Foundation. The marathon “banding for hope” took place from 7pm, 5th May and ended 7pm, 6th May at St James School, Taunton.
The project involved both the training band and the main band. The training band started the event on Friday playing as many pieces from their repertoire as possible inside 2hrs before the main band took over at 9pm continuing throughout the night until 10am when the training band took over for another 2hrs. The main band then resumed until the 24hr period concluded Saturday evening.
The event of musical stamina has raised over £1900 for the Hope Foundation, which works with support disadvantaged families and children in urban India. The charity was picked after band musical director, Martin Wills took a photography trip to Kolkata, India last November and saw for himself firsthand the conditions in which many are forced to live in.
Martin said: “I’m very proud of the band for undertaking this play-a-thon and raising so much for such a worthy cause. Playing through the night was unlike anything we’ve ever done before and certainly was a challenge. Much coffee, tea and snacks were needed for sustenance!”
